NECN.com's Platinum Plate Award...
Connecticut Foodnotes ... I admired the authentic Irish décor, from its stained glass to its furnishings to small details like its railings. There was even an historical mural for those who like to play the identification game. We took our time with our meal, soaking in the experience. The comfortable atmosphere encouraged one to linger for hours. Vaughan’s imports authentic Irish food ingredients and makes a number of items itself. Its Taste of Hartford menu allowed participants to choose one of four appetizers, one of four entrées, and one of two desserts. For appetizers, we didn’t wind up trying the house salad or the soup of the day, which was chicken noodle. My companion elected crisp potato skins filled with Cheddar cheese and bacon and escorted by a ramekin of sour cream. We both agreed they were the best potato skins we had ever had. It was delicious, so I scooped up every last drop. Its meatloaf dinner featured thick slices topped with melted Irish Cheddar and mushroom gravy, along with mashed potato and vegetables. Its fish and chips showcased big, beer-battered cod fillets served over French fries with a little pitcher of tartar sauce. And finally, and best of all, its shepherd’s pie restored my confidence in a childhood favorite that’s rarely done these days with any subtlety or sophistication. Note the housemade Irish soda bread. Happy
Hour on Pratt Street... There simply aren't
enough good Irish pubs in my world. But I can't fault
Vaughan's Public House for that fact, because they happen
to be one of the good ones. And they know how to host
a good Happy Hour, too. Vaughan's likes to begin the
festivities earlier than most places, at 2 p.m., by offering
a selection of 13 draft beers all for only 3 bucks. And
we're talking about the good and the imported stuff here – Guinness,
Smithwicks Irish Red, Stella Artois, Boddingtons Ale – not
just Miller, Coors or Bud Light. Heck, Vaughan's doesn't
even keep light or domestic beer on tap. It seems to
offend the place's finely tuned Irish sensibilities,
apparently... [READ

Air and Space: Belly Up to the Bracket
Sports Illustrated :: March 27, 2006 :: by Steve Rushin
... you have to find a joint in which it's socially acceptable
to hold down a bar stool for 13 consecutive hours. That
bar is Vaughan's Public House, half a blocck from the Hartford
Civic Center, home arena of the UConn Huskies, whose fans
evidently put the AA in NCAA... As Greg Gumbel settled
in at his anchor desk, I settled in at mine, a 25-foot
mahogany bar imported from Ireland. Three overhead TVs
lit the beer taps, which in turn lit the patrons. At the
bar, as on the bracket sheet, one round leads to another...

Guinness in almost everything at Vaughan's
Pub on Pratt Street... Depending
on when you go, Vaughan's can give you that experience of
a cozy and quiet spot for a meal and drinks (after the lunch
rush), or it can be a boisterous bar, a place to gather with
friends and co-workers after a big week (6 p.m. on Fridays).
Vaughan's doesn't exactly fit the pub mold in the food department,
though. What I mean is, you can get a pretty tasty meal there,
more than just the knee-jerk Irish pub fare... [READ
